Cross Academy Field
The site is a parking lot that extends to the north from Coors Field into the RiNo Art District. The need for surface parking
for the stadium has been reduced by the addition of a parking structure at the south end of this linear site. The north
2/3rds of the site is well adapted to a community use, as well as a potential connector for the east/west connection of the
north/south strips of the RiNo district – a part of the city divided by natural and man-made barriers: the Union Pacific rail
lines, the Platte River and the BSFS rail yards. With the reduced need for stadium parking and these surrounding barriers,
this site has become a hidden part of RiNo.
The program is an incubator ‘library’ to serve the ethnically diverse communities around RiNo. From its inception, Denver
and the surrounding areas have played host to many small communities – from the history of Five Points as a centre of
African-American jazz culture, the Japanese-American post-war communities of Brighton, and the Chicano culture of
Auraria. The goal of this studio is to provide a centre around which an ethnic group or groups can preserve and build upon
their legacy in Colorado.
Models such as the Denver Tool Library apply here. We will expand the definition of ‘library’ to include the functional and
intellectual support to the communities served by this cultural facility. So think of a ‘library’ as something more than a
depository of books – think of it as functional lending that will provide knowledge, information and implementation
strategies for underserved communities. It will be a resource for developing talent within the communities it serves.
Individual will then gain the ability to contribute to the broader community while expanding their own horizons.
Program components can include disciplines such as food preparation and restaurateurial skills, mechanical endeavours of
all kinds, and and new technologies that prepare the community for what is to come. The building will be limited to
10,000sf but the site includes ample room to expand beyond the building envelope. The ideal would be for the expertise
gained to translate into income that will sustain the institution.
